It’s a nice self aware move the developers made. I can’t possibly be the only person to complain about this either, because the game offers an option to not only turn down the volume of the Bard narrator, but to also mute him entirely as well. On their own, these two aspects are fine, but thrust at you consistently and constantly they begin to grate and become annoying. Likewise, whenever you lose a character, enter a dungeon, exit a dungeon or seemingly open any menu ever you hear a character sing a bard-like song. Your cat burglar character makes a cat pun or joke every.

It’s nitpick time.įirst is the humor which, in general is cute and corny, but grows old fast. I would unabashedly recommend it if not for a few major issues. Those gripes aside, the game is a fun little distraction that lends itself well to popping into and out of quickly. Maybe all of this changes later on in the game – the second tier of upgrades goes from 50 gold each to an eye watering 1500 I believe – but I hadn’t gotten that far at the time of writing. They don’t really server to help you get past a portion of the game you are struggling with and, honestly, don’t really do much to help you at all. The new items show up but in my two hours of game-play they honestly didn’t seem that impressive or game changing, and the buffs – while nice – only last for the first two fights in any dungeon. Once you have completed the necessary dungeon goals, you pop out to the surface and are free to spend your gold on upgrades for your Guild hall. Monsters will drop items that give your character different combat cards or abilities during battle, and as you build the dungeon by placing room cards (very “Betrayal at House on The Hill”) you can also place loot cards to give yourself more gold when/if you succeed in finishing the dungeon. Each dungeon features a different goal, such as kill x amount of monsters, and each fight will give you different gear or loot. It’s as simple as it sounds, but comes flavored with different rogue-like elements. You take a character, send him into a dungeon in the game to fight monsters and do so by playing cards. At its core, Dungeoneering is a card game. First up, The Guild of Dungeoneering.Ĭoming into this title, I had some idea of what it would be.

Instead, we will focus on the impression each game gave me and whether I intend to keep playing it after those two hours. Regardless, I almost never refund any games, even the ones I hate, so it isn’t worth keeping up the charade. Honestly though? That just felt… odd, and I think it is technically a violation of Steam rules.

GUILD OF DUNGEONEERING SONG SERIES

Initially this was going to be a review series where I would play a game for two hours (the refund limit on Steam) and then say whether it would be worth keeping or refunding. Welcome to the first installment of a new series: The 2-Hour Impression.
